While teaching high school art, I learned all the art history lacking in my own education. As a young artist, I wasn’t interested in history but just wanted to make the work. As I’ve aged, I have become terribly interested in history, the history of art, the history of my family, the history of my life. I loved how Matisse used orange and reds, how juicy they are, rich and deep, sensual and luscious.
